Don’t let glaucoma darken your life

            Glaucoma is a condition that causes damage to eye's optic nerve which is often associated with a buildup of pressure inside the eye. Glaucoma tends to be inherited and may not show up until later in life.
                                             It is not possible to prevent chronic open-angle glaucoma early detection and effective treatment will prevent significant damage to the eyes and preserve your sight. 
        All adults need an eye exam that includes tests for glaucoma every three to five years.

Types of glaucoma

·        open-angle glaucoma
both eyes may be affected at the same time, but one eye is often worse than the other.
·        Narrow or closed-angle glaucoma
less common and occurs suddenly with blurred vision, a great deal of pain in the eye and head, and redness, usually in one eye first
·        Acute closed-angle glaucoma
It’s a medical emergency and needs immediate medical care to restore normal aqueous outflow, reduce pressure, and prevent permanent damage to the eye and blindness.

  ·      Unusual trouble adjusting to dark room
·     Difficulty focusing on near or distant objects
·     Squinting or blinking due to unusual sensitivity to light or glare
·     Change in color of iris
·     Red-rimmed, encrusted or swollen lids
·     Recurrent pain in or around eyes
·     Double vision
·     Dark spot at the center of viewing
·     Lines and edges appear distorted or wavy
·     Excess tearing or "watery eyes"
·     Dry eyes with itching or burning;
·     Seeing spots, ghost-like images
·     Sudden loss of vision in one eye
·     Sudden hazy or blurred vision
·     Flashes of light or black spots
·     Halos or rainbows around light



Treatments for Glaucoma

·        Eye drops
·        pills,
·        laser surgery,
·        traditional surgery or a combination of these methods.


  
WHO'S AT RISK?

·        People over the age of 40. 
·        People who have a family history of glaucoma.
·        People with abnormally high intraocular pressure (IOP). 
·        People of African, Latino, and Asian descent. 
·        People who have:
    • Diabetes
    • Myopia (nearsightedness)
    • Regular, long-term steroid/cortisone use
    • A previous eye injury
    • A family history of glaucoma
    • Extremely high or low blood pressure
