Doctors at Calicut’s Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) have become the first in the state of Kerala to take advantage of a ground breaking micro technology in endourological stone treatment through the use of a new generation of Minimally Invasive Percutaneous kidney stone treatment (MIP) systems.
The pioneering new procedure, currently available at five hospitals in India and only one in Kerala - using a Modular Minimally Invasive Pressure-Controlled PCNL System - is helping transform the way kidney stone operations are carried out by urologists at MIMS. From a patient’s point of view, the procedure is quicker, cheaper and less painful. It is also one that has a dramatic impact on recovery times.
Commenting on the procedure, Dr. Harigovind P, Senior Consultant Urologist, Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences said,
“We are pleased to be the most well equipped hospital in the state thanks to our advanced setup in Minimally Invasive Percutaneous (MIP) kidney stone treatment. Since it is minimally invasive, the many advantages of the technology include shorter hospital stays, lesser pain and almost invisible scarring for patients.”
As far as doctors are concerned, the procedure has advantages such as the capacity to expand the spectrum of percutaneous stone treatment, single step dilation, automatic pressure control, stone extraction in the irrigation flow and the possibility to close the access tract using a gelatin-thrombin matrix in conjunction with ultrasound-guided puncture of kidney, allowing atraumatic and effective stone treatment with fewer complications.
MIMS Urologists had attended the 33rd World Congress of Endourology organised by the Endourological Society in London, UK this October. The Society’s annual World Congress of Endourology (WCE) is considered to be the world’s premier endourological meeting that concentrates on the growing field of minimally invasive urological surgery.
